Subject: The Best Christmas Ever!!! (no snow)
Wow, it rains a lot here, but no snow! I got really lucky this year, because we are one of the only areas in the mission without snow. Al Bernstine told us that he wants to be a "Mormon" for sure now, but we still have a lot to teach him. Christmas is really messing up everything, so we won't even get to see him for three weeks unless he comes to church. And we picked up a really good investigator, at least I think he will be good. (Jesse Arional White Eagle) He came to church yesterday and seemed really interested, he is part Mexican and part Native American. We meet with him in 45 minutes and we will find out how interested he really is. I talked to him for a long time a church. He said that the spirit has really been trying to get him to come to church for a while, and he is not going to fight it any more. He has only been in town for two weeks; apperently, something really bad happened to him in Seattle that drove him down here. The members were great at interacting with him, and I'm sure he'll come to church here for as long as he lives here.
Unfortunately, all the members were so excited to help him that they neglected our other two investigators that came to church. One of them, Billy who is on parole, snuck out after sacrement meeting but we caught him later last night. The other had to stay all three meetings because his son loves primary. He name is Phillip Lin from China. Yesterday was the first time I saw him at Church because he usually works on Sundays. But it was raining so he had the day off. I think the members are afraid to talk to him because his English is horrible, so he mostly just sat by himself when we weren't there.
Hey, I want picture of my family, all the cousins. I don't know who gets this email,(do the triplets get my emails dad?) but could you make sure that all the relatives get it. You can send the pictures to my father and he can email them to me, or you can just mail them to me.

Family pictures would be cool, but individual would be awesome too.
I didn't realize that we were trying to do a call with Jason. Ya nine o'clock a.m. will work for me but I'll have to go to a members house. But that will be fine because everyone wants us at their house on Christmas. My cell number is 916-295-4139, so I think I can call you Christmas eve around Eight my time and tell you the number of the members house that I will be at on Christmas morning. I can only talk for an hour, and I don't know how long Jason can talk for. Is Jason a zone leader? Thats what is sounded like in his email so I think I must have missed something. What is Kristies email and why hasn't she emailed me yet?
Dang, I forgot to tell Sabrina Cromwell congrats! Will someone please tell her for me? When does David leave on his mission. Oh and I heard that Devin Broadhead got his call while I was in the MTC, where and when is he going? How long does Ben have 'till he leaves for service again?
Thanks for everything I love you all

Hey everyone, guess what, we only have a half Pday today, the next week and the next week. I have only had one full Pday since I got to the mission. So my email is going to be really short, I hope. Everything is going really well. You would think that people would be more receptive to letting us into their homes because it is Christmas, but no one wants to talk to us. They all just tell us to come back in a month. I think they need Kristie to come and teach them what Christmas is all about, (you know, Santa hats and shirts that count down the number of days until we get to open a lot of presents that we get for free without paying for them, except someone else had to pay for them--the elves I think). But we are really starting to get the members involved in the wards. We have to teach at least twenty lessons a week so we teach a lot of the members. It's great because we visit all the members at least once a month if not once a week so they are starting to feel the pressure to get us refferals.
Dad, I am very proud of you for using shorthand, but "JK" is for little kids. You've got to use cool stuff like "CTR, BofM, FHE, MAQ" stuff with meaning. I got a dress sweater today and it was pretty cheap. I also got a hoodie but then I found jogging suit that was also pretty cheap so I might return it and trade. But that would be about 30 dollars so IDK. (I did it too) I pretty much have everything here in Caliornia, it is so much better here than it is in Brazil or Germany but at least Scott and Jason were willing to serve wherever thay were called.
Did Scott get the password? Sorry, I answered a lot of your questions in the letter to Kristie. I just never remember anything while we are at the Lie Berry. Oh, and now I'll make you all really jealous. I can email Jason, and he can email me! (evil laugh) But just so you know, Jason, my pday is on Monday, and I don't know what you want for Christmas so it will probably be pretty lame, and you probably won't get it 'til after christmas. Sorry.
And for my call home, do I really have to call home? I doubt you guys miss me anymore. Thanks for the package from Thanksgiving btw. I can recieve a call to my cell phone as long as it is after 7:15 pm on the 20th, 21st, 24th, or 25th. So you would have to call my phone and I could talk for an hour. Or I could call you during the day from a member's home and talk for an hour. So let me know some of the best times and when Jason is calling and we'll decide next week the time.
All right, love you!! That wasn't as short as I wanted it to be.

Hey, I've only been "Dear John'd" Twice so far, thats pretty good. I expect more but it would be better if they came with a box of ice cream to help ease the pain. This week has been really good. My companion is a great guy (other than the fact that he went to Hilcrest and he thinks they have a better debate team than Madison) and he lets me play soccer on p-day. We go running and work out together every morning, even though it is freezing cold here. We are the only missionaries in our zone on bikes and it can get pretty cold here especially on my bike because my coat get pulled half way up my arm when I lean over to pedal. We have only been about 100 miles on our bike so far but it is a big area so we might get a lot of miles in later.
The members here are really great, and everyone seems to know someone in Rexburg. Someone asked me if Dad would know the Marcum family that works at the college with a daughter named Crystal? The members seem really excited about missionary work but they haven't really been tested yet. We left them all commitments to find people for us to teach so we'll see when we follow up how excited they really are. I know the Bishop is going to be great to work with, he reminds me a lot of my Father. He works hard with the members and there are a lot of less active members for him to work with. I think half of the ward is inactive. Our mission president has us do at least twenty lessons a week, most of them with the members. Our goal is to practice our lessons on people who will understand when we mess up and to help them in their misionary efforts. Eventually we hope to replace the members with investigators they give us to teach.
We don't have very many investigators yet so we are trying really hard to increase our pool through the members. We still tract every day and that's fun. We are working with a guy who is pretty much ready to be baptized, but he's on parole so we can't get him for a while. We also are teaching the husband of a recent convert. All the previous missionaries in this area said that he was not interested but his wife called us and asked us to teach him. So we set a date for the lesson with Al (the husband) and Deborah (the wife) and we invited four people to come listen. It's alway great to have members at lessons to testify, but more than two is WAY too many. I think we only got through three parts of lesson one, and we were there for two hours. One of the sisters would not stop telling stories and would not let us talk. She even went off onto some deep doctrines and killed our lesson. We were able to talk about the Book of Mormon though and the spirit was there. I think Al is ready for the gospel so it was really frustrating to not be able to really give it to him.
It would be great if I could just buy the sweater here. Just let me know how much I'm allowed to spend on it. I found I get to go tho the temple while on my mission, I'm just not sure how often yet. If I am south I go to the Sacremento Temple and If I'm up North I go to the one in Oregon. Tell Melinda good luck for me and have Ben write me about boot camp if you can.
Good Luck I love you!

Hey, um I don't really have any other addresses for you to add but if I get any Ill let you know. Anyone can email me but I have to write them back unless they are immediate family. So if you can let people know what my address is, that would be great. Does Jason get my emails? I want his. And I don't care where you send stuff. I'll get it pretty quick either way. But my first area is in Lincoln, 175 S O St #36, Lincoln California,95648. I think that is the right address.
My companion, my trainer (my father), is Elder Burnell. It turns out he was the captain of the Hillcrest soccer team my Junior year. Unfortunately that was the year I sat on the bench so I never really played him. We got to play soccer with some of the ward members on Thanksgiving though and that was pretty fun. We also played some turkey bowl; there was a guy there, Brother Fear, who played for BYU.
We had Thanksgiving dinner at a members house, but we also got a turkey from someone. We cooked that this morning and it was really good, my father is a good cook. Oh, and Sam Head! I sent him a letter the first week I was at the MTC so that it would get to Brazil about the same time he was supposed to, and I got the letter back a week later because of insufficient postage. So I re-sent it the next morning then I went to look for some of my friends who were coming in that day. I think five guys from Idaho entered the MTC that day, there was around twenty of us altogether. So I found where they had all the greenies and I watched as all of them walked by. I saw Alec Fulmer, Broderick Johnston (from our stake), German Mag(however you spell it, the guy from my soccer team), Curtis Ferrin (the guy who went through the temple with me), and I was about to leave because I thought I had seen everyone and then Sam Head walked past me! It was awesome to see him, but I had just spent three bucks sending him a letter. Oh well, such is life.
Wow, tell Ray I said Hi, Ill have to write him a letter next week, and is Brayten really a priest? I hope they enjoyed giving their talks.
Mom had asked me earlier what I wanted for Christmas, but I don't have time to type my whole list. :) I have ruined only one of my white shirts so far, but a couple of new CTR long sleeve shirts would be cool. And I would really like a sweater. I don't know if it would be cheaper to mail me one of my soccer sweaters or if I should just buy one here. I wouldn't mind some pictures and picture frames. I really like the ones we took when Scott got home from Germany. I think I pretty much have everything else that I need, but can you tell Scott not to send my mp3 player? They changed the rules so we can't have them anymore. I still want the 8 gb sd card and my card reader though. I don't really care what he does with the mp3 player. Maybe if he gets married it can be my present to his wife.
In case you were wondering what happened to all the money on my debit card, I had to pay for an elders luggage at the airport. He was from Tonga and he was having a hard time speaking English. I should get a refund though but if not I figured you wouldn't mind. This week has been really fun. We live in an apartment with four Elders, the other two are Elder Gibson and Elder Weatchler. Elder Gisbson is from Canada. I had a Canadian in my district at the MTC. For some reason, I just really like Canadians so we have a fun apt. Our complex has a lot of random peacocks running around. I don't think they really belong to anyone but they are protected by some law.
We go tracting every day and I think that is the funnest of all we do so far. We taught a guy the first lesson on his door step and left him the Book of Mormon. I don't know if he was really interested but he had some free time and nothing better to do. I set up an apointment with him for this Wednesday so we'll see how that goes. We have taught a few lessons and those are also very fun. It is even easier teaching out here in the field where there are real people to teach. I guess there were real people to teach in the MTC but those were more like fake real people. I'll tell you more about the families we are teaching next week, but it sufficeth me to say we are enjoying the work. Well have fun, I love you, choose the right, be jealous 'cause I'm enjoying perfect weather and I'm on a mission, and all that good stuff.

Hey I'm here and I'm alive and I have one more hour today than you do. I haven't been assigned to my area or my companion yet so I guess I'll have to write you next Monday. I think that is my Pday. I also think my bike is here but I am not sure yet. There is also a package here from mom but I haven't opened it yet.
I could have called this morning but I decided not to because I'll call in December. Oh, but I did try calling with the calling card because one of the missionaries in our group was missing so I had to call my mission president. I ended up having to use quarters. It all worked out. Well, I'm excited and not really nervous yet. I don't think it has hit me yet that I'm on my mission. Well thanks again. I have plenty of stories for you already so I'll write you soon.

Ryan's letters are also posted at http://elderryanallred.blogspot.com/
Below the dotted line is the message that I thought I sent to you last week, but I guess I forgot the I after BYU. Oh well, you get two this week. I did get the letters from mom, two of them. I remember dad throwing that letter to me and I forgot about it. So now I guess you can activate it. Thanks. Oh and I already bought new scriptures, I was wondering why you never sent me a dear elder telling me whether or not I could buy new ones. By the way, I had asked you in the below letter for them. I finally got sick of waiting for your answer when I ripped another page out of my BoM so I just bought a new set, thanks.
Life is pretty good here, and I only have one week left until I get to actually start teaching. Oh, guess what mom? Elder Busche and his wife gave the devotional last week. I got to go and talk to him after. He talked about grandpa in his talk but didn't mention his name.
Hey, when is Kristies play? Don't forget to record it if you still can. Is Scott married yet? He still hasn't sent me any letters, I wrote him soo much while he was in the mtc. The work here is fun and the more I do it the more I look forward to doing this the rest of my life. The gospel is the only thing I think I could stand doing for so long. Sorry dad, but I would get really sick of being an accountant after a day or two. We get to do phone calls and it is amazing to see how many people are really interested in learning about the gospel, many of them have never heard ogf the Book of Mormon and the never considered the idea that Christ visited all Gods children. The BoM fascinates them and they want to learn more asap. We sometime give people most of the first lesson over the phone. I can't wait to get to really talk to people face to face.
Well that's all I think I want to write today. Thanks for everything.

Hey this is my first P-Day, its on Tuesdays for now just so you know. I don't have much time so Ill just ask you a quick question. My scriptures are pretty old and a lot of the pages are tearing. It is not a big deal, but I would like to buy a new set since they are pretty cheap here. I think that it would be helpful to have separate Bible and BofMormon copies. I have enough money here for them but if I use that money I won't have enough for emergency money. So we have three choices; you could write me via dearelder.com tomorrow and tell me to buck up and deal with the old scriptures, or you could tell me tomorrow that you will send reinforcements of fifty dollars in the mail and I will use the money I have and wait patiently for the reinforcements, or I think you can buy things through dearelder.com and just pick out what you want them to give me. If you choose the latter, I was just going to buy a green set of the cheaper ones with tabs, but not a quad. Please let me know as soon as you can so I can get them marked. Thanks.
I have not yet recieved the letter from my mother, just so you know. I did however have the oppurtunity to go to the temple this morning. It was wonderfull to be there where the spirit is so strong. I love it here at the MTC and I just finished doing my laundry succesfully for the first time. Thanks for being a supporting family.
-Elder Ryan J Allred
P.S. Just so the Girls con't say that I don't talk to them, HI girls.
P.P.S. Oh and I tried to make this look pretty but these are pretty old computers and there is no spell check so thanks for fixing all my errors dad.
P.P.P.S. And I placed my first Book of Mormon. Well, sort of. We call people to see if they recieved there free copies, and the lady I called wasn't home so I talked to her roomate and challenged her to accept the BofM and the missionaries. She seemed pretty excited and wanted a movie of Christ too. So I sent the missionaries in her area over to her.
P.P.P.P.S. I was the only one in my district to get someone to say yes!
P.P.P.P.P.S. Im very Humble!!!
Have Fun

Have Fun
